FACT: During a daily briefing, U.S. State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said “as you know, we support the right of peaceful, non-violent protest around the world. That said, India is a democracy and we count on India to exercise appropriate democratic restraint in the way it deals with peaceful protest.”
“We have seen the needless comments by the U.S. State Department Spokesperson on handling of peaceful protests in India. Freedoms of speech and expression, as well as, of peaceful assembly, are enshrined in the Constitution of India and exercised by citizens of this country of 1.2 billion people,” spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs said. Incidentally, Anna’s movement has enlisted many high-profile donors, including private firms, banks and CEOs. India Vision Foundation, an NGO founded by Kiran Bedi who is part of Hazare’s team, also has many national and international donors, including Lehman Brothers, Bharti Wal-Mart, foreign embassies, etc. (ref: indianexpress.com 12 August 2011).
OWL WATCH: US has invested in Anna’s movement through many funding agencies. So the comment from US State Department is not worthless. US talks money only. US has gifted “democracy” to Afghanistan and Iraq in the past years. Does US want to purchase Indian democracy? US supports non-violent protest around the world – but here did people ask US to support? If yes, who are they?
